For today, you had to read chapters thee and four. These chapters were about The Rhetorical Situation and basic practices for writing arguments.

Journal: (Suggested: 10 Minutes)

Identify and describe the five parts of The Rhetorical Situation as they relate to the following image:

Now identify and describe the five parts of The Rhetorical Situation as they relate to the following text:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Group Work: (Suggested: 5 – 7 Minutes)

Share your findings and compile and answer to present to the class.

Mini-Lecture: (Suggested: 5 -7 Minutes)

Your first responsibility in this class is to pay attention to how people argue – not to defend your own beliefs or assumptions.  If you can’t look beyond your own cultural boundaries, you won’t learn how to argue.

What are some of your basic assumptions about the future, your future? Where do they come from? Why do you have them?

Homework:

Read and Annotate: Why We Flirt (541-544). Identify the rhetorical situation.
