Eh 200 Spring 2011: Week Five Class Three

January 1, 2009

Homework Review: (Suggested: 20 Minutes)

For today, we put our précis into its final draft. I want to spend the first 20 minutes of class today with a peer review exercise.

We are going to each read at least two précis, and, on the back, answer the questions on the handout.

Class Discussion:

Next week, I will be asking to correct your final draft with MLA citation, and this will give you the opportunity to move a letter grade up + or down a full letter grade.

Here is what you will be responsible for.

1: Before the citation, you will need to cite the article in MLA format: you can use either the citation format for an article in a newspaper or an article from an electronic source (webpage).

Here is the webpage you will need to go to: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/

We will also be responsible for in text citation, which should be fairly easy with the assignment.

When we paraphrase or quote, we need to let the reader know where the information is coming from. In this instance, all you will need to do is provide the page number at the end of the quote or paraphrased information:

“This is an example of how to do it” (2).

We will use our own pagination for this, and cite pages 1, 2, 3, or 4.

Activity: We have spent this week thinking about the different kinds of arguments and their potential relationships with ethos, pathos, and logos.

With the remainder of our time this week, I want to challenge you to draft a mini-argument on a topic of your choosing, and to support it with evidence that can be associated with ethos, pathos, or logos.

Watch 20 Minutes of a Network Sunday News Show: Meet the Press (NBC), Face the Nation (CBS), or This Week (ABC). What do you see? Is there an argument being made? Be ready to report on it to the class next time.
