One of the questions listed on page 105 is “Who is the audience for this argument?” If applied to the article “The Oblivious Empire” the answer would be the American people. The article is trying to convince the reader of reasons why other countries do not particularly like America. Other countries probably would not be all that interested in this article, however most American citizens would be. The audience for the article is any American citizen. Another question that is listed on page 105 is “How does it try to make the writer or creator seem trustworthy?” This is done in the article by first listing the author’s credentials. The author of the article has written a few books discussing topics on the environment, Reagan’s presidency, and the book which the Oblivious Empire article came from. The newspapers for which the author writes for are also listed. These things all contribute to the author or writer seeming trustworthy. Within the text the author also makes himself trustworthy by talking about his own experiences in London, and Robben Island, hearing first hand from people in other countries of why they dislike America. His personal, from the source opinions, make him seem more knowledgeable.
