Today’s Agenda

Over the course of the last week, we have been working on the first drafts of our third paper. I know there were e-mail issues with one or two of you, and we can resolve those after class today.

1) Let’s begin with a reflection on how this draft is better than the last draft. What did you change or improve to make this draft a more viable document?

2) A)     As always, let’s take several moments to reflect on our writing. What went well? What did not go so well?

B)      Group discussion

C)      Class Discussion

D)     Focused Workshop

1) Eyeballing it!

8)      Are the paragraphs constructed appropriately? 6-8 sentences long? Focused on one topic? Is a quote or citation included? *NEW: HAS THE AUTHOR MADE A REASONABLE EFFORT TO TRANSITION FROM ONE IDEA TO THE NEXT?

9)      ii.      Use of quotes and citations. When the author uses quotes or citations, do they follow the three-step process?

10)  iii.      Clarity: Perform a sentence-by-sentence evaluation of   content. Does the wording of a sentence undermine its meaning (i.e. could it be clearer? If so, how: provide a suggestion)

11)  b.      Assessing it: On the back of the document write a two paragraph assessment of the paper. Consider the following issues

12)  i.      Does the author do a good job of teaching you about his or her subject?

13)  ii.      Does the author make a good argument? Is it persuasive? If so, why?

14)  iii.      Play devil’s advocate: try to undermine the argument by proposing and explaining an alternative thesis?

A conversation on sources

A Conversation on Portfolio preparation

For Thursday, revise paper and submit to me by e-mail. You will hear back from me late Friday, early Saturday. You will then revise and bring three copies of the paper with you to class on TUESDAY. Let me know right away if you do not, as I do appear to be having some e-mail issues.

ALSO FOR TUESDAY:

Come to class with an organized class folder: all of your paper drafts should be in chronological order, starting with the oldest versions. Also, make to you have printed out any and all papers you have received from me that you have not printed out. When you submit papers in your portfolio, they need to be in the correct word processing format, so you will need to copy and paste the e-mails you have received from me into word documents with proper font and font size, and spacing as well. Have this work with you when you come to class on TUESDAY.
