Today’s Agenda
Your homework for today was to read “Arguments based in reason: Logos“. Readings: Required 78-101
You were also to write a one-and-a-half page blog post on the following topic:
Clearly identify and describe in detail a logos-based argument that you have encountered recently. What was the argument? How was the argument designed to appeal to your reason? Did this appeal work? If so, why? If not, why not?
For the next 10 minutes, I want you to write a journal response to the following question:
Now that you have identified a logos-based argument in your own life, I want you to identify and describe other kinds of logos-based arguments you MIGHT or COULD encounter on a day-to-day basis. What is it about these arguments that would qualify them as being logos-based? Explain in SIGNIFICANT DETAIL.
Group Discussion (5-10)
Class Discussion (5-10)
Okay, now I want you to get into groups and open your texts to “The Oblivious Empire.” Over the next ten or so minutes, I want you to identify which parts, if any, of this argument are pathos, ethos, or logos based. One of the things I want you to take from today is arguments are not always simple one kind of argument or another, but, rather are a mixture of parts.
Homework:
Complete Next Draft of the Précis.
Read: Defining Speaker and Purpose 102-115

Advertisements for the lowest prices, or products, if stated that they are the lowest is a form of logos argument. A logos argument that might happen, during a day to day basis, could happen at any type of store. I’m thinking specifically about Wal-Mart. They claim to have the “lowest prices, everyday” or they will say something along the lines of “living better costs less as Wal-Mart“. This type of ad or claim, is making a logos argument because they are saying they have the lowest price, as it is a fact. By saying that they have the lowest prices, they are saying, out of everyone we sell the same things for much less. This is a convincing argument since people would love to pay less for the same things they would get from another store. I do not know however, if in fact their prices are lower than other stores. I am going to assume that their prices are lower but not by much. Either way, they are making a logos argument by saying we have the lowest prices.
