Today’s Agenda
1) Remember, there is no class on Friday.
2) For today, you were to e-mail me the revised draft of Paper 2, which will be returned to you early next week. We will work with these papers some more next week, but for now unit two has effectively come to an end. You have written your basic guided argument.
3) Today we are going to begin Unit Three – the final unit of this course and for this semester!
EH 124: RESEARCH ARGUMENT
This unit has several important goals, all of which will culminate in your creation of a compose a 4-6 page thesis-based argument on a topic of your choosing that incorporates 4-6 texts from a variety of sources.
Skills:
- Topic identification, development, and later revision
- Research methods (including skimming, note-taking and annotation)
- Discrimination amongst sources according to relevance and quality
- Incorporation and documentation of sources
Let’s begin by revisiting the essay we read on executioners a few days ago. You were supposed to annotate this for fallacies. Let’s skim it, and then talk about it in groups. What did you make of this argument and its construction?

Class Discussion
Okay, let’s recap the tools we have for assessing arguments:
Discussion of Form and Content
Topics for consideration?
Before we generate any thesis statements, let’s think about some topics we could consider.
What are some thesis statements we might have for these subjects?
Where would we get information on these topics?
Homework: Find and submit 15 sources cited in MLA citation style that relate to your topic. (NOT AN OPTION NOT TO DO THIS! Page 555 in your book. E-mail these to me.)
